How should one save oneself when encountering a road collapse?
Road collapse is a sudden geological disaster, often caused by multiple factors. If you encounter a road collapse and can still escape, how should you save yourself?
Causes of Road Collapse
1. Caused by underground pipe network leakage
Leaks and seepage from underground pipe networks, water supply and drainage pipes, etc., caused by underground construction or corrosion and aging, are the main causes of most road collapses; water erosion leads to soil loss and direct damage to the soil structure, thus forming underground cavities and causing road collapse accidents.
2. Caused by improper construction of underground structures
Improper construction during the construction of underground structures such as subways and tunnels can easily cause damage to the soil structure. A large amount of groundwater seeps out, causing a large amount of soil loss in the loose soil layer above or around the underground structure, gradually forming an underground cavity; or directly causing the rock and soil mass above the structure to collapse, causing road collapse. Because most accidents are caused by human factors, it is difficult for people to escape in time when accidents occur suddenly, and casualties are very likely to occur.
3. Caused by natural conditions or disaster evolution
Continuous heavy rain, floods, freezing, snow, large temperature differences, and loose geology can all affect the effective force distribution and structural strength of the backfilled subgrade or the soil under the subgrade, leading to road collapse.
4. Caused by exceeding road load limits
There is a cavity under the original road surface. Overloading of vehicles and exceeding road load limits directly lead to insufficient road support, causing large-area collapse. Although exceeding the load limit is not the direct cause of road collapse in most cases, it is often the last straw that breaks the camel's back (road collapse).
There are often these signs before road collapse:
① Well water and spring water suddenly dry up, or become turbid and sandy, or the water level suddenly drops;
② Circular, radial, and parallel intersecting cracks appear on the ground;
③ Buildings creak, tilt, and crack;
④ The ground appears to be sunken, with unexplained water accumulation, and a slight sound of the collapse of the underground soil layer can be heard.
Self-rescue methods for encountering road collapse
1. When pedestrians encounter a road collapse, they should put their hands on their heads, protect their faces with their arms, squat down and huddle together, hide their faces between their knees, and maintain maximum breathing space; try to protect their mouths and noses to prevent inhaling dust.
2. After the collapse, if you can still escape, quickly escape, and call for help if necessary. If you cannot escape, save your energy, call for help in time, and wait for rescue. If you have a signal, quickly call the police, or use nearby water pipes, gas pipes, etc. to make a sound to call for help.
3. If a car falls into the collapsed area, quickly unfasten your seat belt after the car comes to a stop and escape through the window to find an escape route. If buried, do not panic, quickly use communication tools to call for help, conserve energy, and do not forcefully rescue yourself.
4. After the ground collapses, stay away from the accident site to avoid secondary disasters. Set up warning signs around the disaster site in time and evacuate the crowd.
