“As a startup founded in 2022, The company’s shipment volume has risen to second place in the domestic industry. “The product has been successfully deployed in critical engineering geotechnical investigations, including the Wuhan Metro and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project,” said Yang Hongxing, General Manager of Wuhan Volat Technology Co., Ltd. He added that, since its launch, the product has not only reduced the price of imported ground-penetrating radar by 40% but has also helped safeguard national geographic information security.

Stepping into the pilot‑scale workshop of Wuhan BoDong Technology Co., Ltd., located in Qingshan Shugu on Hongwei Road Street, R&D engineer Zhang Xiong sits before a specialized instrument, fine‑tuning a long, black “box.” He explains that this is the company’s newly developed high‑resolution ground‑penetrating radar, which functions like a pair of “x‑ray vision” eyes: by emitting high‑frequency, wideband electromagnetic pulses, it can penetrate up to 70 meters of subsurface strata and generate clear geological images.

“The equipment can not only visualize subsurface structures but also determine the geometric shape of target objects,” explained Zhang Xiong. He added that deeply buried archaeological sites, ancient river channels, and deep karst caves can all be accurately detected.

At present, Wuhan Wubang Technology Co., Ltd. has independently developed a range of products, including borehole radar for detecting underground metals, tunnel radar for conducting health assessments of tunnels, and slope radar for real-time monitoring of deformation in mountain slopes.

How has this company, established just four years ago, mastered core technologies and achieved rapid growth? According to General Manager Yang Hongxing, all four members of the founding team have been engaged in geological research and related fields for more than two decades. As early as 2016, the founding team partnered with China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) to tackle key technological challenges and accelerate the commercialization of laboratory‑derived innovations.

Over six years, the company’s founding team drove into the remote mountainous regions of Guangxi and Guizhou to assess karst-related hazards, ventured onto the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia to monitor groundwater levels, visited coal-mining areas in Shaanxi to survey underground mined-out voids, and conducted inspections of reservoir dam integrity in Fujian.

“Weather, temperature, and humidity all affect the water content of geological strata, which in turn influences the reception of electromagnetic pulse signals. At a geological testing base of a research institute in Guilin, Guangxi, with known exploration results, the prototype equipment simply failed to deliver accurate readings,” said Yang Hongxing. Over the course of a year, he made five round trips between Wuhan and Guilin; whenever a test failed, he returned to Wuhan to pore over academic papers, consult experts, and recalibrate the equipment—only on the sixth attempt did he finally achieve successful detection.

Yang Hongxing stated that Wuhan is home to a number of leading engineering design firms, such as the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group and the Second Highway Consultants Co., Ltd., as well as research institutions like the China University of Geosciences, which have provided the founding team with extensive geological data to train their machine-learning algorithms.

In recent years, Wuhan Boddong Technology Co., Ltd. has seen its self-developed ground-penetrating radar gain international recognition as it has been exported alongside domestic engineering and construction firms, successfully reaching more than ten countries including Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
