[Changjiang Daily Client] Focused on exploring the underground world, a Qingshan enterprise has independently developed a radar capable of “seeing” up to 70 meters beneath the surface.
Airborne weather radar helps commercial aircraft reroute to avoid hazardous weather conditions, while vehicle-mounted millimeter-wave radar enables autonomous driving for smart cars. Meanwhile, a company in Qingshan District is focusing on exploring the underground world; its self-developed, high-depth geological exploration radar can provide an unobstructed view of the subsurface up to 70 meters below ground.
“As a startup founded in 2022, our company has already risen to second place in the domestic industry in terms of shipments. Our products have been successfully applied to critical geological surveys for major projects such as the Wuhan Metro and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project,” said Yang Hongxing, General Manager of Wuhan Wave Technology Co., Ltd. He added that since the launch of our products, not only have import prices for geophysical radars dropped by 40%, but we’ve also safeguarded national geographic information security.
Stepping into the pilot-scale workshop of Wuhan Wave Technology Company, located in Qingshan Shugu on Hongwei Road Street, R&D engineer Zhang Xiong sits in front of specialized equipment, fine-tuning a black, elongated “box.” He explains that this is the company’s newly developed deep-depth geological exploration radar—a device that seems to possess “x-ray vision.” By emitting high-frequency, broadband electromagnetic pulses, it can penetrate up to 70 meters beneath the surface, delivering clear geological images.
“The equipment can not only visualize underground structures but also detect the geometric shapes of target objects,” explained Zhang Xiong. “Buried historical sites, ancient riverbeds, and deep karst caves—all can be precisely ‘captured’ by it.”
Currently, Wuhan Wave Technology Co., Ltd. has independently developed a variety of products, including borehole radar for detecting underground metals, tunnel radar for conducting health checks on tunnels, and slope radar for real-time monitoring of deformation in mountain slopes.
How has this company—founded just four years ago—mastered core technologies and achieved rapid growth? Yang Hongxing, the company’s general manager, explained that all four founding team members have been engaged in geological research and related fields for over two decades. As early as 2016, the founding team had already joined forces with China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) to tackle key technological challenges and accelerate the commercialization of laboratory研究成果.
Over the past six years, the company’s founding team has driven into the remote mountainous regions of Guangxi and Guizhou to detect karst hazards, ventured into the Gobi Desert of Inner Mongolia to monitor groundwater levels, traveled to coal-producing areas in Shaanxi to investigate mine voids, and headed to Fujian to assess the structural integrity of reservoir dams.
“Weather, temperature, and humidity all affect the moisture content of geological strata, which in turn impacts the reception of electromagnetic pulse signals,” said Yang Hongxing. “At a geological testing base of a research institute in Guilin, Guangxi—where exploration results were already known—the prototype equipment simply couldn’t detect accurately.” Over the course of a year, Yang Hongxing made five round trips between Wuhan and Guilin. Whenever the tests failed, he’d return to Wuhan to pore over academic papers, consult with experts, and fine-tune the equipment—until finally, on the sixth attempt, he succeeded in making a successful detection.
Yang Hongxing said that Wuhan is home to a number of outstanding engineering design institutions, such as the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Design Institute and the Second Public Works Design Institute of China Communications Construction Company, as well as research institutes like the University of Geosciences. These institutions have provided the founding team with vast amounts of geological data, which have been used to train the model algorithms.
In recent years, the geological radar developed in-house by Wuhan Wave Technology Co., Ltd. has been exported overseas along with Chinese engineering and construction enterprises, earning a solid reputation abroad and successfully entering more than 10 countries including Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
